What α is for
First letter of the Greek alphabet, and a workhorse variable: significance level in statistics, angle of attack in aerodynamics, opacity in graphics. Also the alpha in an alpha release, by way of "first".
How to type α
The shortcuts below are the built-in routes. With

macOS
No direct shortcut. Use Edit → Emoji & Symbols, or switch to the Unicode Hex
