What ♥ is for
The card suit, drawn as a plain glyph rather than the coloured heart emoji. That distinction is the point: this one stays black in a terminal, a spreadsheet or a monospaced list, where the emoji would not.
How to type ♥

is the same on every platform.
macOS
No direct shortcut. Use Edit → Emoji & Symbols, or switch to the Unicode Hex
