The most-used kaomoji there is, and the reason most people learn the word kaomoji at all. Means resignation more than confusion: not "I do not know" so much as "I have stopped trying to find out". Built from a macron, a katakana tsu and some slashes, which is why it survives a copy-paste into almost anything.

the version with one arm
Pasting the shrug into a field that eats backslashes drops an arm and leaves ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ looking broken. Typing it from a shortcode sidesteps the problem entirely.
