°

Degree symbol

Type :deg: · Math

What ° is for

Temperature, angles, and coordinates. Style guides split on the space: 20°C usually closes up for temperature, while a bearing like 45° never takes one. It is a degree sign, not a superscript o, and the difference shows up the moment anything tries to search or sort the text.

How to type °

The shortcuts below are the built-in routes. With Emoji Anywhere installed you can skip all of them and type :deg: in any text field instead, which is the same on every platform.

macOS

Option + Shift + 8

Windows

Alt + 0176

Hold Alt and type the digits on the keypad.

Unicode U+00B0

What ° gets mistaken for

degree celsius

A single character for the whole unit. Fine in running text, awkward if anything downstream expects a number followed by a unit.

ring operator

A maths operator that happens to look like a small degree sign. Wrong for temperature.
