Type :up_triangle: · Shapes & stars
Unicode name Black Up-Pointing Triangle · Geometric Shapes block · added in Unicode 1.1, 1993
What ▲ is for
A solid triangle pointing up: an increase, an expanded state, or a sort direction. Reads more strongly than an arrow, which is why interfaces use it for sorting.
