Apple Logo symbol
Type :applelogo: · Marks
No official Unicode name · Private Use Area block · added in Unicode 1.1, 1993
What is for
The Apple logo is not really in Unicode. It sits at U+F8FF, the last slot of the Private Use Area, which the standard leaves empty for anyone to fill, and Apple fills it in its own fonts. So it shows as the logo on a Mac, iPhone or iPad and as an empty box or a blank on Windows, Android and Linux. It is fine in a bio or a message to someone you know is on Apple, and a gamble anywhere the audience is mixed.

What gets mistaken for
red apple emoji
The fruit, which every platform draws. It is what :apple: types, and the safe choice when the reader might not be on an Apple device.
command key
The looped square on the Mac command key. Early Macs had the Apple logo on that key too, which is why people still call it the Apple key.
