What ๐ is for
The double-struck capital X that everybody types when they mean the X logo, because the logo itself is a trademark and Unicode does not encode trademarks. It has been in the standard since 2001 as a maths letter, the blackboard bold X you would find on a lecture hall whiteboard, and it picked up a second job in July 2023 when Twitter was renamed. It is safe in a display name or a bio, though on anything with a thin font it falls back to a plain X or an empty box.
How to type ๐
The shortcuts below are the built-in routes. With
Emoji Anywhere
installed you can skip all of them and type
:xlogo: in any text field instead, which
is the same on every platform.
macOS
No direct shortcut, and Unicode Hex Input cannot reach this one: that source takes four digits and this codepoint has five. Use Edit โ Emoji & Symbols and search it by name.
Windows
No Alt code. In Word, type 1D54F then press Alt +
X. Elsewhere use the emoji panel with Win + Period, or Character Map.

What ๐ gets mistaken for
capital X
The letter on your keyboard. It reads as the same word and carries none of the brand, which is usually the whole reason for reaching past it.
multiplication sign
The maths one, narrower than a letter and sitting on the middle of the line. It belongs in 3 ร 4 and nowhere near a name.
ballot x
The checkbox X, for marking something wrong or rejected. Heavier and more angular, and it looks out of place in running text.
